It’s Christmas! We, at Startup Stories, would like to wish all you readers a very happy and Merry Christmas. Since Christmas is the time of giving, spreading joy and love, let’s take a look at some of the inventions that have helped humans through the ages, making the world an easier and better place to live.

1. Electricity and the light bulb
Any inventions list will be incomplete without electricity and the light bulb. Where would humans be if we did not have electricity to power our day to day lives? The electric light bulb invented by Thomas Alva Edison is, to this day, considered to be one of the most important inventions, paving the path for many other inventions and discoveries. On the other hand, while Benjamin Franklin is given credit for discovering electricity, electricity became a reality due to the contributions of various scientists over a period of time.

2. Printing Press
The printing press was invented by Johannes Gutenberg in the 15 century. Gutenberg’s printing press reduced the cost of printing books and other documents thereby allowing for books to be printed even in lesser numbers. By the 16th century, the output rose tenfold to an estimated 150 to 200 million copies. The arrival of mechanical movable type printing introduced the era of mass communication and resulted in a sharp increase in literacy. Today, practically every alternate house has a printer.

3. Computers
Computers, like electricity, have now become a part and parcel of our daily life. These electronic devices that could initially only manipulate, store, retrieve or process data are now used for basically everything in life. Next generation computers can process all forms of data, prioritize information, suggest solutions, learn habits over time and come with personalized digital assistants. Charles Babbage is hugely credited with this invention.

4. Internet
One of the most important inventions, at least for the millennials, is the Internet brought about a huge change in the way the world communicated with each other. Initially designed to be used by the American military, the Internet has now taken over the majority of the industries, digitizing the entire world. Now, new industries like the startup ecosystem are on a rise due to easy access to the internet and its ability to connect the world.

5. Smartphones
Where do we even begin with smartphones? Since 2007, when the first iPhone hit the markets, smartphones have only made life super easy. Right from scheduling appointments to carrying a digital assistant in your pocket and creating augmented realities in your backyard, the smartphones of now can do it all.

This is our list of inventions that have made our life a piece of cake. If you feel we missed out on any amazing inventions, discoveries and innovations, let us know in the comments below. If you are creating the next big thing, write to us at [email protected].

April Fool’s Day, the one day where you are allowed to be funny, just went by. To commemorate this iconic day, tech companies around the world worked extremely (not) hard to pull off some truly brilliant jokes. To make the second day of April a tad bit more exciting than the first, we have rounded up some of the best pranks our tech geeks pulled off this year!

1. Google

Google had a ball with its pranks this year. From Google Maps to Google Cloud, this tech giant went a tad bit crazy with its pranks this year. Check the list out here!

a) Google Maps

Google lets you find Waldo in Google Maps. Once you’ve discovered him, you’ll get more and more games to search for him over and over again. To do so, go to  Google Maps online or update your iPhone and Android apps. Just maybe don’t do this when you’re on the hunt for a location.

b) The Google homepage

Google Australia decided to redesign its homepage in an attempt to stay with the times. It is now called Googz.

c) Google Cloud

Google Cloud launched the Hummus app which matches you to your perfect hummus. While it may have been a prank, it is definitely something Google could do, right?

d) Files Go

The Files Go team invented the bad joke detector. For April 1st. Right.

2) Snapchat

Snapchat may have performed the best prank this year. Targetted at Facebook (of course,) the Snapchat team introduced a new filter just like the Facebook app. The only twist? The text reads in Russian! Two birds, one stone right there!

3) OnePlus

OnePlus seems to be catching up with the year’s fad: cryptocurrencies and Bitcoins. Last week, the company began teasing people everywhere by saying it was going to make its own blockchain! Algthough the idea seems gimmicky, it doesn’t really seem all the far fetched!

4) Ola

India’s homegrown cab conglomerate, Ola, has definitely maintained its position as the top prankster of this year by pulling off quite a classic prank.  Apparently, Ola started a new news channel called ONN (short for Ola News Network) featuring its own drivers, as well as Share riders, as journalists and field reporters. The videos posted by Ola on its social media platforms look realistic and share a mutual idea of many who want more local news. Even on topics such as why is there no electricity in your house while the neighbours can be heard giggling over the jokes on a TV show. Well, we know that’s not what you look for in a news bulletin!

5) Reliance Jio

One of the most interesting additions to the prankster family is Reliance Jio. Not to be outdone by the other prankers, Reliance joined the club with a twist. Last week, Jio gave us a glimpse of what looked like a battery management app called the Jio Juice. According to the teasers, the new technology will charge your smartphone as soon you insert the Jio sim card. Maybe someday this could happen but today is definitely not the day!

We love pranks. We love them all the more when our tech geniuses come together to create brilliance. This year has been quite a fun day for April Fool’s lovers!
