Google’s self-driving cars also known as Waymo cars are getting better and better with autonomous driving. Perhaps more than any other company Google autonomous driving records have been under close scrutiny.
As the company had been checking the cars going many more miles, the number of disengagement of the cars actually decreased.
From the reports of the Waymo’s blog post, the disengagement actually decreased from 0.8 per 1000 miles in 2015 to 0.2 in 2016.
Numerically speaking, the Waymo cars ran 424,331 miles with 341 disengagements in 2015 while in 2016 there were just 124 disengagements when the cars ran 635868 miles.
Dmitri Dolgov, head of Waymo cars wrote on his blog saying: “This four-fold improvement reflects our significant hard work we have been doing to improve our software as well as the hardware. This has given us the valuable experience sharing the road safely with cyclists and pedestrians.”
The state of California wants an autonomous driving permit from the companies who want to test their self-driving cars, and also should report their disengagement levels to the company.
Waymo cars are miles ahead of its competitors in public testing. Its main competitor Tesla has revealed their rate of about 330 disengagements per 1000 miles.
After revealing the reports, it is clear that Google’s Waymo is doing so much better than its competitor’s cars.
