Everyone loves a movie with a good message. If you are an entrepreneur, there are some movies you definitely should watch because some are educational, some are inspirational while some others have a cautionary tale to tell about the art of business. Here is a list of movies you must watch to gain a better perspective on life.

1. Startup.com

Startup.com is a 2001 documentary which focused on the rise and fall of GoWorks, a startup which raised $ 60 million from Hearst Interactive Media, KKR, the New York Investment Fund, and Sapient. The points covered in this movie included capital raising, growth management, entrepreneurship skills, team building and management skills. A must watch for all entrepreneurs!

2. Office Space 

Office Space perfectly depicted everything that could go wrong with a startup. Hideous management skills and unhappy employees form the crux of this office drama. The movie revolves around one man who leads a revolution against the management style and comes out victorious at the end. Several valuable lessons in this movie including the value of daring to break free of your mind numbing job and following your own path. This movie also carries a powerful message about the importance of wearing the right amount of flair at all times.

3. The Social Network 

The Social Network maps the rise of Mark Zuckerberg from an ordinary college student to one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the current world. Zuckerberg founded the online social media platform, Facebook, in a dorm room at Harvard and from there, it has become a platform which is used all over the world. Apart from learning from Zuckerberg’s experience, you’ll also enjoy some deft storytelling and a brilliant background score.

4. Wall Street 

Filmed during the peak of the Reagan presidency, Wall Street as a movie informed a generation of young business people that ‘Greed is good.” An object lesson in what happens when you shed all traces of morality in the pursuit of money and power, Wall Street is a perfect reminder that giving up your principals for money comes with a high price.

5. Catch Me If You Can 

There are very many lines one must not cross as an entrepreneur. Catch Me If You Can talks about just those lines. While Abagnale Jr. works against all odds to get to where he is, the route he takes is the wrong one. This is a lesson one is taught time and time again in this movie and an important thing to make note. A movie to watch and learn on what not to do when you start your own business!

6. Moneyball 

Moneyball worked wonders because it showed the true story of how Bille Beane disrupted baseball by using computer generated analytics to hire the best team possible. His use of extremely accurate techniques shattered all possible records and proved just how effectively you could use technology to revolutionize sports.

7. The Wolf Of Wall Street 

The Wolf of Wall Street is every 21st century entrepreneur’s cautionary tale. While one can never go wrong in life with too much money, one can also go very wrong. Wolf of Wall Street shows us just how wrong your life can go with more money than you know what to do.

8. Pursuit of Happyness

Based on the life of Chris Gardner, a man who rose from abject poverty to become a wall street legend, Pursuit of Happyness is an inspirational story like never before. To not give up the dream of your life is the underlying message of this movie.

Here is taking a look at some of the truly inspirational life lessons from the engineer who literally changed the world.

1. Believe in yourself

Through the years of his successful life, Tesla was only able to achieve all the great things he could because he believed in himself and his ideas, with passion. When Tesla was working with Thomas Edison, he was literally the only person in the world who had the courage to challenge the latter, who was the only other smart engineer at the time. If he had just taken Edison’s feedback about not harnessing the power from Niagara Falls, Tesla wouldn’t have popularised the usage of alternating current (AC) and electricity! If you don’t believe in yourself, you can never really achieve what you set out doing.

2. Quit when you feel you’re taken for granted

One of the greatest things by which Tesla lived was to quit when he thought he was being used. He learned this while working with Edison. During the initial days, when Tesla worked with Edison, he was promised $ 50,000 by his boss if he could make his groundbreaking idea work. However, the moment Tesla did the unthinkable, Edison brushed him off and gave him just a small bump instead. The moment this happened, Tesla quit. Why? Because when you truly start feeling undervalued, leave and find a place where you are appreciated not just for your skills, but for who you are as well!

3. Don’t pay attention to those around you

One of the reasons Tesla was who he was, was because he refused to pay attention to all the negative people in his life. When Tesla was working on inventing things like the radio, many thought the concept of sound from a machine was a ludicrous idea. If there is one thing the invention of the radio taught us, it is to focus on what you want to do in life and stop thinking about what you are losing out in life. In fact, if all everyone ever did was worry about what the other person thought, getting ahead would have been an extremely difficult task.

4. It is okay to be ahead

There are certain people at the top who got there because of the amount of effort they put. In fact, Tesla even taught us, real creators and inventors are those who don’t have to always be accepted by society and their peers. Rise above every occasion and learn to be proud of who you are, no matter what. When Tesla started becoming famous, his inventions were often mocked. Had he not decided to take every opportunity he had and make something of himself, all the things Tesla invented wouldn’t be around today!

5. Never stop learning or reading

Just like there is no limit to how much knowledge one can learn, there is no limit to how much you can read. Keep reading and keep attaining as much information as possible. 3. Communicate the action which needs to be taken

In extremely critical situations, it is important for you, as a leader, to take complete charge. This is not really a plan but an important step in the process of solving the problem. Give direct orders to those who can get things done and make sure you delegate as much as possible. Avoid leaving things open ended and have your pointers mentioned directly.

4. Create a crisis management team

One of the best ways to deal with a crisis situation head on is by creating a crisis management team. With senior executives, business leads and your public relations team, your crisis management team should include every member who is equipped with the skills to solve a problem from the very word go. Once you get your team in place, you can start working on delegating and then turn your attention to more pressing matters.

5. Be accessible

When in a situation which needs your attention completely, it is important to let your employees know you are available no matter what. Sometimes, even though you have given direct orders, people are faced with sudden questions and it is your job to get everything clarified. Have all your documents open and accessible so people know, even at times like this, you care most about honesty.

6. Let your team know your door is always open

There are always times when you as a leader tend to lower your strong exterior. Realise that when you have a team working for you, everything can’t always be peachy happy. Make sure you are always available for your team, no matter what happens. Even if there are issues which end up affecting the work, a good talking through always helps in resolving them.
