Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook, is a woman who has constantly been working to change the way women are looked at in the corporate world and has given everyone a lot of food for thought. Sheryl, who has been an all rounder, has taught us a lot about not just leaning in, but about growing with the times as well. These lessons have made a huge impact on my life as well as on how I live every day!

1. Never let anyone else dictate who you are

As a woman working in a male dominated world, Sheryl Sandberg has taught people to never apologize for being you and to never let people assume things about you. Essentially, your strong opinion about yourself should be what people hear about you first, so there is no doubt in your character whatsoever. Taking initiative always pays off and if someone is always told what to do, it becomes harder to see them as a leader.

2. Do not undermine yourself

Time and time again, Sandberg has said people never really show off their true colours till you really know them. Many people never really recognize their full potential and feel guilty for the praise they receive. Sandberg believes doubting your abilities is a horribly negative way of living life, with no hope of a happy ending. Stop undermining yourself and the world will be your oyster!

3. Celebrate the joys in the little things

In a world where we are constantly trying to find satisfaction in things larger than life, it has become imperative for people (now, more than ever,) to celebrate the small moments in life. From birthdays to milestones, celebrate everything that brings joy to not only the people you celebrate with, but to you as well! For instance, post her husband’s death, Sandberg realised her friends stopped doing things that made them happy. However, the loss taught her the importance of celebrating every little moment, not only in her life, but in the lives of her friends and loved ones as well!

4. Live life through the Platinum Rule

People always tell you it is important to treat people the way they treat you. However, more often than not, this NEVER happens. When such is the case, Sandberg believes it’s time to follow the other rule of life, the Platinum Rule. According to the Platinum Rule, you should treat people the way they want to be treated and not the way they treat you! One of the main advantages of this is you understand people much better by doing this. Furthermore, this approach helped Sandberg become one of the most respected women not only in Facebook, but in the world!

5. It is okay to say you need help

After the sudden death of Sandberg’s husband, she realised one important thing; everybody needs help and no one can go through major events in life alone. Lean in, be okay with letting other people help you and accept that you truly cannot control the world around you. By doing so, you learn to be more empathetic and understanding of situations and people, thereby letting yourself have a chance of happiness in some form.

The world is forever changing and if you do not let go of the little things, you can never really hold on to the things that matter. “Start growing and keep learning” is a rule Sheryl Sandberg lives by and I honestly think we should all too.

Top 10 Soft Skills That Companies Need Most In 2020

Soft skills are a combination of people skills, social skills and communication skills.  These skills are an essential part of a job description in recent years as more and more companies are recognizing the importance of having soft skills to complement hard skills.  Skills generally imply a practical function but in the case of soft skills it could be interpreted as the ability to master hard to control actions.

Soft skills can improve a person’s chances of success while seeking a job opportunity as they let an individual stand out from the crowd.  The list of soft skills which are in demand constantly keeps changing to complement the ever changing work landscape.

According to some of the famous job portals and professional networking platforms, these are the ten soft skills that companies desire  in 2020.

1. Critical Thinking:

Critical thinking is the act of analyzing facts to understand a problem or topic thoroughly. Critical thinking often occurs in order of a few steps from identifying a problem or issue to developing a solution.  As technology becomes increasingly complex by the day, this is a skill that would always be one of the most sought after by companies.  For example an automobile mechanic would have to identify the problem of why a car is seemingly breaking down out of the blue.  In order to identify the problem, the mechanic cannot dismantle the entire car to zero in on the root cause but instead he/she should be able to single out which part of the car is the problem stemming .  The solution could be found out by analyzing the problem at hand, organizing and sorting the data at hand.  Situations like these are where critical thinking abilities come to the fore.

2. Persuasion:

Persuasion is the ability to convince a teammate or a client to understand your point of view.  The ability to persuade someone by being able to explain the ‘why’ would be a sign of a leadership quality in an individual.  Therefore it is important to brush up on the ability to effectively communicate ideas to one’s colleagues.

3. Complex problem solving

Can two existing technologies be merged to come up with a single technology that does the same amount of work and improves efficiency?  Is it possible to reduce the environmental impact by coming up with a recyclable alternative?  These are the kind of scenarios where complex problem solving comes into the picture.  To put it simply, it is the ability to analyse and make calculated decisions.  A good example here would be how the Telangana state government worked with the Municipal Corporation Of Hyderabad to make use of the ongoing lockdown to carry out road repair works, drainage works, pending flyover construction works.  The lack of public on the roads means work progresses at a faster rate thereby bringing down labor charges and equipment rental charges.

4. Collaboration

Collaboration is the process of two or more individuals or organisations working together to complete a project or a goal.  Collaboration can bring out communication skills to the fore and a collaborative environment can be an extremely rewarding environment to hone different soft skills and leadership traits.  Teams or individuals can achieve high functionality when working in a collaborative atmosphere.

5. Adaptability

Change is the only constant in life or a business.  Being adaptable means being open to learning new skills and experiences, being able to change working styles or picking up job roles outside of your comfort zone.  Organisations are always on the lookout for this trait.  Being adaptable in your career or job role could mean you are able to respond quickly to changing ideas, responsibilities, expectations, trends, strategies and other processes at work.

6. Emotional Intelligence

Emotional intelligence is the ability to understand and manage one’s emotions.  Individuals with a high degree of emotional intelligence are always careful about how their emotions can affect other people.  Emotional intelligence is a skill which can be learned by increasing self awareness, empathy, motivation and cultivating social skills.  The more you manage to master these qualities, the higher the emotional intelligence. The ability to perceive, understand and respond to one’s own emotions or that of others is a trait which is in high demand.

7. People management

People management is the ability to assess and analyse the skills of individual persons and come up with a plan to manage all the skills available to make a high functioning team.  This is a skill which lets an employer understand how empathetic is a candidate they are interviewing.

8. Negotiation

The art of negotiation is a highly sought after skill since ages.  Having the ability to negotiate means an individual is able to reconcile differences diplomatically without compromising on the value of the output.

9. Helpful attitude or service orientation

Service orientation is the ability to anticipate, recognize and meet other people’s needs sometimes even before the needs are expressed.  This is a highly sought after skill in the service and product based industries.

10. Cognitive Flexibility

Cognitive flexibility refers to the brain’s ability to transition from thinking about one concept to another.  Someone who is cognitively flexible will be able to learn more quickly, and adapt and respond to new situations more effectively, which is why it’s so important in both educational settings and the workplace.  It also means being able to adapt and modify communications depending on the situation or a person.  Employers want to know you don’t just say the same thing, in the same way, to everyone.  Having this skill will reaffirm an employers belief in a candidate that they can handle multiple scenarios or works at the same time without compromising on the quality

These are the skills that would enhance the chances of an individual to get noticed. The real question however is if you are rising up to the challenge and learn these skills.  Let us know if there are any other important soft skills which need to be mentioned!

Mark Zuckerberg is the man who redefined social media networking and gave us Facebook.  Starting work on this platform at the age of 19, Zuckerberg quite literally changed the way networking and how some parts of marketing work!  Check out these inspiring life lessons from Zuckerberg to motivate you to do better:

1. Always solve problems

Zuckerberg has always looked at what is the most important thing he could be doing in life.  Before things get too out of hand, Zuckerberg believes in looking at what can be done to calm down the situation.  Take, for example, the data leaks scam. When he started facing a lot of heat from people all over the world, Zuckerberg realised the best way to calm everyone down was by making a public announcement.  This not only helped sort things out, it helped people get clarity about what was happening. The lesson to learn here is to address your problems head on and only when you solve them, can you move ahead.

2. Don’t start your business with money in mind

From day one, Zuckerberg always believed in Facebook.  He never thought of how much money it could make, but how much of an impact it would have on people.  While he may have had to change directions when the idea wasn’t working for Facebook, he never looked at making a profit.  Did you know, he was the only entrepreneur who refused to sell Facebook, even when offered a billion dollars? Work on your passion and grow, without money being your priority.

3. Be mindful

One of the things which act as a crutch to your growth is how much attention you give to your critics.  Mark Zuckerberg learnt this the moment he decided to make Facebook what it is today. According to him, if you start paying attention to all the noise around you, then you can’t grow and will constantly keep thinking about what people are saying.  For instance, if Zuckerberg kept listening to people talk about how Facebook was a negative addition to the society, Facebook would not be as successful as it is. Be mindful of your passions and of how you want to grow. Everything else will automatically fall into place.

4. Bring out the best in those around you

When Zuckerberg started adding people to his team, he realised in order to make a great team, he had to bring out only the best in his employees.  From encouraging women to be fearless leaders, to instilling his team with passion everyday, Zuckerberg always worked to get the best out of everyone he employed.  In fact, he believed in this principle so much, he appointed Sheryl Sandberg to become the first board member of Facebook!

5. Have a vision

From the very beginning, Mark Zuckerberg had one vision—to have a positive impact on those around him.  Since quite a few years, he has been working extremely hard to make this come true. From talking to various world leaders, to making an extremely strong impact with his speech at the United Nations, Zuckerberg has constantly worked to use social media to change future generations.  Furthermore, Zuckerberg also aims to use the World Wide Web to eradicate global social problems, a task which he plans to accomplish without using the help of political leaders directly.  Despite creating a social media networking platform like Facebook, Zuckerberg never stopped looking at how to impact the world and if he can do this, so can you!

Despite being embroiled in multiple controversies, Mark Zuckerberg always makes sure he has a positive impact on society.  If you think we missed mentioning any other lessons from the man behind Facebook, comment and let us know!
