More often than not, there are a lot of things one needs to get done apart from going down the road of securing finances. Here is our list of things you must have in place (other than money) before you start your business!

1. An understanding of the market

You have an idea and you want to turn the idea into reality, which is all well and good. However, what most people who want to start a business do not realise is the necessity of understanding the market as well. Understand the competition, analyse what makes your peers work and realise what you as a business need to do to stand out from the crowd. Get your analysis in place and make sure you have your unique selling points outlined loud and clear!

2. Self discipline

Often times, people get side tracked during the beginning of a business. Running your business requires a lot of control, focus and effort into achieving your end goal. Decide your goals early on in the beginning and every day, make sure you complete all the things on your list before the day ends. Even if you feel like you are wandering off the track, take a break and get yourself to stick to the straight road.

3. Time

Ever felt like you don’t have enough time on your hands? Ever felt like there is too much happening around you and you just do not know where the time goes? Just like it is important to have your goals in place, it is important to keep a check on the time you take to finish these goals as well. When you structure your time according to the things that are important to you, then you know where your time is going and how you can make the most of the 24 hours you have. Schedule the morning hours for the important things you need to get done during the day and then work your way toward achieving your goals.

4. Secure a team

More often than not, not a lot of employers realise the value of having a strong and loyal team in place. Get all the people you need in your corner with you and when you do hire the first round of people, make sure you give them all they need to stay on with you to the very end. A loyal team helps in giving your business the backbone for a strong future and honestly, no business can work without a strong team.

5. Be sure of what your business’s vision is

While this point seems like an obvious one, it just has to be mentioned here. With a market that is already fragmented and diverse,it is important to have a vision for your startup. Having a vision for your business is essential to help you understand what is to be done to achieve not just the short term goals, but also the long term goals. A business vision also gives you a direction as to what you should and should not invest in to grow your business.

Only after you dot the i’s and cross the t’ can your business grow. What is your checklist? Comment and let us know!

Vinyl records, mixed tapes and cassette players were not long ago synonymous with music.  Then Apple started toying around with the idea of iPods, which led to the creation of Apple Music, there was a new way to listen to music. However, people slowly started looking for different apps and because of the hunt for a new path, Spotiy was born!  You know you can do things like listen to music and download playlists on the app, but did you know you could do these cool things on the app as well?

Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do With Spotify

1. Run with Spotify

When you run with music, the high is quite unlike what you expected, right?  With Spotify, the high is quite a different one. The app records your pace using your phone’s accelerometer and based on the tempo of your running, it finds the right music to suit your mood.  For example, if you are running 100 steps per minute, Spotify will pick music in a way which helps you maintain your pace. To use this feature, all you have to do is to pick the playlist you want and start running.  Spotify will do the rest. If you haven’t use this feature from the app, get on it now!

2. Get lyrics to the songs on the app

One of the most helpful tricks on Spotify is, it gives you lyrics to all the songs you listen to without switching browsers or looking for them on another website!  To view the lyrics of the song, pick the track and click on the image which comes with song, which then shows the lyrics. However, while this sounds like quite a neat trick, the feature is available only for certain songs and is only usable on the mobile version of the app.  Try it and thank us later.

3. Send particular parts of the song to your friends

How many times have you thought of sending a friend certain parts of a song, but could not because the app doesn’t let you clip the song?  With Spotify, this is no longer a problem. To send a certain part of the song through Spotify, all you have to do is Right-click on the song and choose Copy Spotify URI (Uniform Resource Indicator.)  Paste the link in a message, add # and how far in the song they should listen. For example, if you want your friend to listen to the lyrics when the song is at 2:01, type #2.01 on the link and send it to your friend.  When your friend clicks on the link, they’ll automatically hear the song from the mentioned time. Problem solved!

4. Add non Spotify music to the app

Even though you usually find all the songs you want on Spotify, those rare treasures you really want to listen to just aren’t available  To make life simpler for you, Spotify lets you add music from external apps.  All you have to do is go to Settings, swipe down until you see the “Locate Files” option and click on “Add Source.”  Add whatever music you like and create your perfect playlist in a matter of minutes. You’re welcome.

5. Find songs for every mood

Sometimes you want songs to match your mood, but you just can’t seem to find the right one, right?  By giving you songs for quite literally every mood possible, Spotify helps you with just this situation.  All you have to do is use the Moodagent app to find the perfect playlist for your mood. If you think the app doesn’t have the songs fit for your mood, enter what you feel at the point and the Spotify app does the rest!  Not only does the app create a playlist for the specific mood in which you are, it also lets you control the tempo and curve of the songs to which you are listening.

When you use Spotify right, you realise there are so many things you can do of which you don’t really take advantage.  If you think we missed out on any other cheats and tricks to make using Spotify a simple process, comment and let us know!

How To Resolve Conflicts At Work

When you have a group of people working on multiple projects for a long period of time, conflicts are inevitable.  Even though you screened your team members and hired them after a thorough vetting process, conflicts arise. While they may have all the right answers to your questions on how to handle conflicts, they aren’t always equipped to deal with the situation in real life.  If you have faced this situation at work on more than one occasion, then here are steps you can follow to resolve conflicts:

1. Don’t avoid the problem

In order to start solving the problem, start by embracing the situation.  The more you avoid it, the bigger it becomes and the harder it becomes to deal with the conflict in question.  To get around the dispute, sit your team down and ask them what the issue is first. Set up a time and talk about the problem uninterrupted.  Don’t assign blame, instead, talk to your team, understand the problem and get to the root of the situation. The minute you understand what happened, you can figure out a way to get to a solution.  When you deal with the problem at hand on mutual ground, it reduces the amount of tension and gives you the best possible outcome not just for your team, but for the project as well!

2. Keep your conversations focused on the goal

When you are looking at resolving a tough situation, make sure that your conversations are centered around the end goal.  Sometimes, when you have discussions with multiple people at the same time, the conversations tend to go all over the place.  When you are sitting down to resolve conflicts, this cannot happen because you lose sight of the end goal and this usually leads to more conflict.  Prepare a rough set of talking points before entering the meeting and have an agenda in place so things don’t go haywire. The more focused your discussion is, the quicker you solve the problem!

3. Listen

Most conflicts are usually resolved when you start listening to what other people are saying.  When the other person is coming to you with their grievances, listen to them carefully. Wait till they finish what they have to tell you and only then, voice a suggestion.  Once the person has finished, don’t offer your opinions to them. Instead, let them find the answers. You could say something along the lines of: “So your basic problem with them is this, but you would like to solve it another way?”  Through this approach, you let the other person know you are open to letting them fix the problem themselves.

4. Find  middle ground

When you are dealing with solving a conflict, the conversation mainly centers around  disagreements. However, if are going to solve the problem, focus on the details, which help in solving the issues at hand.  This step works when you have listened to either side and figured out where the two parties have common interests. When things get too heated, turn the conversation back to the middle ground.  By doing this, you not only cool the situation down, but also show your team members you care about them.

5. Give them a path

The final step in solving a conflict is to provide a route to solve the confusion.  While you aren’t directly giving your group a direct solution, you are taking them to the answer by guiding them along the way.  You can do this by talking about the positive points of letting go and why getting over this scrimmage is actually in their favour.  Chart out a course of action and tell them to try out the plan for a specific duration, say, 2 months. Revisit the problem after the specified duration and look at what worked and did not.  By doing this, you get a clear understanding of how deep the problem goes and if it can not be worked out immediately, then chart out a different course of action. Whatever it may be, you can solve the issue at hand only with a clear understanding of the problem and the path ahead.

As a leader, solving conflicts and resolving arguments is one of your key responsibilities.  If you think there are different ways you could solve a problem, comment and let us know!
