Uber, the ride sharing app that lets you book a cab with just the tap of a button, had a very humble beginning. Founded by a college dropout (Travis Kalanick) who dreamed of making it big in the world, the app now has a presence in close to 300 countries all over the world! 1. An iPhone for every driver
In an attempt to unify the drivers with one type of device, the company equipped all its drivers with an iPhone. Through this phone, the drivers can track and contact users who have booked a ride. However, the phone is locked for personal use and is made available only for people employed by Uber!
2. Uber had a different name when it started
Did you know that when Travis first brought Uber to the public, it had a different name? Uber was initially called Ubercab. However, the company was issued with a cease and desist order as Travis was operating the company that offered a cab service, without having the required license to do so. Incidentally, this name change proved to be a blessing in disguise, propelling Uber into a massive superpower!
3. Uber used its equity for its URL
Uber’s unique trademark URL, Uber.com, wasn’t achieved the normal way. Travis and his team had to trade Uber’s equity to get control of this particular website and boy, did it work in their favour! This move came to be after the cease and desist order against Ubercab. However, over a course of time, Travis eventually bought back the 2 % stake for a whopping $ 1 million!
4. Uber cabs can’t be more than 10 years old
Every cab used by Uber drivers has to be no less than 10 years old. Every car gets upgraded the moment it reaches that particular number, making sure all the cabs are in perfect condition when on the road. Furthermore, all the cars used by Uber are required to have four doors and no less!
5. Uber has four types of drivers
Uber hires and classifies its drivers according to their experience. Currently, there are four types of drivers on Uber’s roster: Pros, Enthusiasts, Crossovers and Part Time. In some cases, when inspections of other cabs are carried, the drivers on the top of the chain are the ones who carry out these surveys and checks!
6. Tips are not a part of the bill
Riders are not allowed to tip the drivers. In fact, as of 2016, drivers were not allowed to say the word “tip” while talking to a customer! According to the Uber hiring policy, Uber drivers keep 80 % of the money they make while only 20 % goes back to the company. This ensures equal pay between both the drivers and the parent company, leaving no room for the requirement of tips.

1. Gmail Motion

In 2011, Gmail announced it would launch a brand new motion feature which would allow people to control the email server by combining motion technology and semiotics.Through this combination, Google planned to channel facial recognition techniques and change the way people use email. Designed to be intuitive and to the point, Google Motion was going to make tasks like opening mail and sending replies an extremely sensory based method! 2. When Netflix “acquired” Seth Rogen
Perhaps one of the most epic things pulled off by Netflix, the day 1st April 2018 is forever embedded in history. When Netflix announced on this day last year, it had acquired Seth Rogen, it left a lot of people amused and surprised. According to the press release by Netflix, Seth Rogen entered into a lifetime deal to transfer full ownership of his personal autonomy to Netflix Inc. It was only a few days after the day of pranks that everyone realised this acquisition was not even close to the truth. Oops.

On the 1st of April almost five years ago, Uber announced people could ride and fly in supercars on its platform. According to the announcement, people could request for Lamborghinis and Ferraris to come to you and take you for a joy ride. While only a fantasy, this prank was quite a cool one, wasn’t it?

With the announcement of Petlexa, which was similar to Alexa, Amazon planned to let dogs, cats, and other animals communicate with Alexa just like you would. Apart from communicating with Alexa, Petlexa also gave pets the option of ordering from Amazon and to activate toys enabled for their smart homes. These companies also claimed 90 % of the people contacted using MIRA responded in less than five hours.

1. Remember you are not immortal

When Jobs dropped out six months after entering Reeds College, everyone around him thought it was a huge deal. When Jobs was given up for adoption, his birth mother had made college a necessity, which is why the drop out came as such a problem and disappointment. However, what kept him going was, even though he had made such a massive decision, it was to support his dreams and to push his passion forward. The lesson here? Learn to follow your heart and learn to trust in yourself, no matter what.
5. Create a niche and be the best
Why is Apple what it is today? It is because of the way Jobs created a specific requirement and made sure people wanted the product years after the initial excitement. One of the things of which Jobs was sure both at Apple and at NeXT was, he was really great at producing brilliant technology. When he announced the iPad and iPods, people were expecting them to be extremely overpriced because of the way Jobs had marketed the products. However, when they came out at half the price, everyone was surprised! The way Jobs created a niche for products people didn’t know they wanted was Apple’s primary reasons for the stepping stones to success!
6. Always change the game
How did Apple change the game from being almost bankrupt in 3 months to being the producer of an iPhone 10 years later?
