For the uninitiated, Tinder is a smartphone app that at first seems like a higher tech version of “hot or not.” Users are shown photos of nearby potential matches and can swipe right to “like” and left for “nope.” Mutual right swipes result in a match, followed by the prompt to either send a message or “keep playing.” This “Keep playing! Keep playing!” mantra has led to an epidemic of 500 million swipes (and 5 million matches) a day.

As soon Tinder launched in the year 2012, it became the next big wave of change to hit the world after the debut of internet. Just like every major revolutionary idea, the impetus for Tinder occurred to one of the founders while doing an extremely menial task, going to the bathroom! Remember the online card game solitaire? When the largest online dating platform was first created, profiles of the users was stacked like a digital stack of cards.

The app was founded by Sean Rad, Jonathan Badeen and Justin Mateen, a trio of 27 year old entrepreneurs who “seeded” it in the University of Southern California with just 300 people. By the end of the week, the platform had 1000 users and a brand new craze was born. Most of Tinder’s success and kick starting journey can be traced back to Badeen’s shower story.

When he got out of the shower, he realised the swiping technique used whilst cleaning the mirror was a tool which could be used on an online/mobile app. Initially, Tinder was only created for the Apple IOS format. However, when the founders realised there were a large number of people who wanted to use the platform, they moved to Android as well. While the concept for swiping your matches to left and right was a unique idea, the founders had to work really hard to turn the process into a game.

Although the app is seen largely as a fling and miss kind of a platform, the founders are looking at expanding Tinder’s user notions to being larger than one just for casual hook ups. The purpose of the platform is to grow beyond what it is now and to become a place where people meet in order to create serious relationships and bonds. Six years down the road, Tinder now has over 1.4 billion swipes a day, across 196 countries! Talk about a match made in heaven!

When Kickstarter Was Kickstarted!

Published

on

The summer of 2009 was quite remarkable for Perry Chen, Yancey Stricker and Charles Adler. It was that time of the year when their dream website Kickstarter was launched! Kickstarter is a New York based public benefit corporation known for building a global crowdfunding platform. The company brings creative projects to reality and is the go to platform for many entrepreneurs! There ain’t no middlemen, no loans and no grants. Sounds cool, right?

The inception of Kickstarter!

Back in 2005, the mastermind Perry met Yancey Strickler and they became good friends. In a friendly conversation, the duo started scribbling on a whiteboard their exceptional thoughts with regard to a crowdfunding platform! Later, Perry convinced his friends to give him a little bit of money. Months later, Perry was introduced to Charles Adler and so the rest you know! The three of the great minds started working on their ideas and turned it into a website.

After years of research, they finally launched the website in 2009 which was then flooded with tons of investors and projects.

Perry Chan, along with the American media editor, Yancey Stricker and American Web designer, Charles Adler came up with the idea of launching a website for the purpose of crowdfunding. Post the launch of their website, the founders spread word about Kickstarter in their friends circle. However, projects started coming in and people stepped up to support projects consequently. In January 2010,  the team moved into a tenement building in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. From 3,910 successful projects and $ 27,638,318 pledges in 2010, the firm was reaching new heights already! This was followed by 18,109 successfully funded projects and $ 319,786,629 pledges in the year 2012. In the year 2013 Perry stepped down from the position of the CEO and went on to become the Chairman. He was replaced by Yancey Strickler. The year of 2014 brought the company a huge raising $ 13.28 million, which became the most funded Kickstarter project in history!

Here’s what makes Kickstarter so interesting!

Kickstarter does not rely on affluent investors. The company opts for crowdfunding, in which loads of smaller investors make contributions. The investment could be as little as a $ 1 and there are basically no restrictions. The company generated its revenue by assessing a fee of 5 percent from projects that reached or surpassed their funding targets. Projects that did not meet their funding goals within a specified time period did not receive any money pledged to them, and they were not subjected to the fee. The company so far has funded thousands of projects from investor donations resulting in several hundred million dollars. Isn’t that huge?

Kickstarter has become extremely important in the startup ecosystem! From entrepreneurs to investors, Kickstarter is one damn platform that could get you what you desire!

She observed the lingerie sales figures reached peaks overseas but, Indian women were not provided with the similar innerwear. While Richa was studying the Indian lingerie market, she realized the social embarrassment in India surrounding lingerie shopping. It was causing several problems for women as well as retailers.

Richa researched many lingerie stores and found out that women were uncomfortable buying inner wears as the stores had male salesperson.

In order to solve the issues, Richa came up with Zivame!

Post the launch of the website, there were questions raised on the image of Richa’s family in the society. Her friends and family members wondered if she had to admit she was selling bras and panties on the web in the typical Indian language. Initially, Richa faced a lot of pressure but that didn’t stop her from achieving her goals!

There were a lot of people who also made fun of her business!

Richa couldn’t even find a place on rent because the landlords asked her what she was doing and she had to tell them she sold clothes online.

Richa says,

If you are strong, focused and passionate about what you want to do, everything falls in place.

Zivame also partnered with several media channels that launched Zivame bra advertisements that created awareness among women!

Alongside, the website also provided customers with the option of returning the products as well! With time, Zivame started getting positive response from its buyers!
